ArchiverFS – File Archiving Solution for Servers & Storage Systems
ArchiverFS is a solution for file archiving on servers and network systems for storage that allows the user to be able to use any device as 2nd tier archive storage while leaving only a tiny footprint on the host system.
Features
It features total support for:
- DFS
- Cloud
- De-duplication
- Replication
- Compression
ArchiverFS allows the user to use any SAN, NAS as well as cloud for storage of old files that are unstructured. If you are able to share it to the network via a UNC pathway and are able to format with NTFS then you are able to use it as 2nd line storage. You can move old files to secondary storage and can do it easily with little overhead with this program.
No database
The reason this is so easy and successful is that at no time is the program using a database, to store:
- Files
- Pointers to files
- Metadata
It is pure NTF from beginning to end. This simply means that unlike other software programs used for archiving or management of file storage, ArchiverFS has only a tiny footprint on the host system. This software was released first in 2002 and ArchiverFS is currently being used by a large range of organizations around the world; many are household names. This program stands unique among solutions for file archiving of SMB shares, Windows file servers, and network file storage. Unlike the other archiving products, this software uses normal NTFS files as well as folders during the complete process.
No pseudo-document system
This is not some type of pseudo-document management system. This company stayed with what they are good at, and that is designing a highly efficient and lightweight solution that handles the problem of out of date and old unstructured files shared on networks.
Unique method
Their approach is quite unique – ArchiverFS is extremely cost-effective and very scalable. It gives users the most cost-effective method to archive old files and able to move huge quantities of files over the network to 2nd tier storage like SAN or NAS while only leaving a tiny trace on the host system – small footprint. This program enables you to move, store and then end the life of old unstructured files from your system in a controlled and cost-effective manner, helping you to handle challenges such as
Data Protection and GDPR compliance. And in addition to this unique approach, the only functionality is already included natively in the Windows Operating system. ArchiverFS does not need the installation by IT employees to each workstation or services which makes deployment easy and a breeze.
ArchiverFS allows you to move old files from any UNC pathway over the network using a range of conditions that include:
- Age
- Size
- Type
The target used to move old files to can be:
- CIFS share
- NAS device
- iSCSI volume
- VM
- Cloud storage
You can migrate old data to the cloud easily and this includes:
- Azure
- Amazon AWS
- Google Cloud
If the target and the source volumes are both formatted with NTFS and are shared with the network by SMB, then the content can easily be handled and moved between them.
No proprietary storage
There is not any point during this program’s archiving solution where the program stores files (or even information about moved files) in a database or “proprietary storage” process. This is key as it offers scalability that is massive and makes ArchiverFS so unbelievably efficient. The largest file system presently managed by this software at 3.4 Petabytes of data that is unstructured and this is accomplished using a single “Datacenter edition license” that is set up on a very small VM having only 4 vCPUs together with 6 GB of Ram.
Direct Access
Direct Access offers users access instantly to content. A user only needs to click on the link that is left in place of the archived file – this goes right from the workstation of the user directly to the file. There is no need for help from IT or any other components in the way meaning that users do not have to sit around waiting for any items to be returned to the live system before being able to access it. These items are returned to the live system by the daily maintenance job that runs during off-hours. All the information regarding where every file has been archived is maintained in the file system itself using directory properties and structures.
Multiple link types
There are types of stubs available that can be left behind in place of the files when they are migrated, including totally seamless links that behave precisely as the initial item. There are shortcuts for both files and folders which are much like the traditional Windows shortcuts. These have the benefit of compatibility and can even be opened by Apple Macs that use an add-in such as “Win Shortcutter”.
3 tier storage structure
This storage structure Includes stages of:
- Live
- Archived
- Graveyard
This exclusive feature allows this program to establish a true “Hierarchical Storage Management system” and moves your old files and content for just a fraction of the cost of the more traditional file archiving solutions.
Perpetual and subscription licenses
There are two subscription licenses currently offered – perpetual and subscription. These licenses are obtainable for a little over $1590 for two TB of handling with that for every TB of files moved from a live system to a 2nd line storage. Unlike other programs, you are not charged based on the amount of old data that is sitting idle in 2nd line storage. This Subscription pricing is based only on the size of the files that you move from live to archive storage each year and not how much data you have sat in 2nd line storage. You will not have to pay yearly just to have the content set in storage.
